A single character randomly decides they want a baby, but they don't want to have one the old fashioned way. Usually they want to use artificial insemination, but sometimes they want to adopt.

- Too Close for Comfort: Season 5, episode 6, "And Baby Makes Two" (1985). Jackie decides she wants to have a baby with her boyfriend, Bill St. George, but she doesn't want to get married.
- Newhart: Season 6, episode 13, "My Three Dads" (1988). Larry, Darryl, and Darryl, decide they want a child, and since they can't convince any woman to marry one of them, they plan to adopt. The adoption agency lets them adopt a boy who's about to turn 18 and age out of foster care.
- Murphy Brown: Season 1, episode 6, "Baby Love" (1988). After her pregnant friend warns her that she'll regret never having a child, Murphy decides to go to a sperm bank so she can have a baby without a man being involved.
- The Golden Girls: Season 5, episode 3, "The Accurate Conception" (1989). Blanche's daughter, Rebecca, tells her that she wants to have a baby by artificial insemination through a sperm bank, and she doesn't want to get married.
- Cheers: Season 8, episode 26, "Uncle Sam Wants You" (1991). After spending a lot of time with Freddy Crane, Sam decides he wants to be a father, but he has to convince a woman to have the baby for him.
- NewsRadio: Season 3, episode 21, "Sleeping" (1997). Lisa realizes she hasn't accomplished all of her life goals, so she tells Dave she wants to have a baby with him, but to Dave's surprise, she doesn't want to get married and is determined to raise her child by herself.
- NewsRadio: Season 4, episode 10, "Look Who's Talking" (1998). Bill announces to everyone that he's adopting a baby because he's not getting any younger and has been unable to find a woman who would have one with him.
