Playing the Market
A character decides to get involved in the stock market. Usually they buy stock, but occasionally they sell it.

- The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Season 3, episode 20, "The Big Blunder and Egg Man" (1962). Dobie decides to invest in the stock market to impress a business-minded girl. At first he cleans up, but when he doesn't sell at the right time, he loses everything.
- The Patty Duke Show: Season 2, episode 12, "This Little Patty Went to Market" (1964). Patty decides to start her own corporation and sell stock to the kids at school.
- Too Close for Comfort: Season 4, episode 14, "Goodbye, Mr. Chip" (1984). Monroe borrows a friend's computer and uses it to pick stocks to buy, and his predictions seem to be correct, so Henry buys the stock too. Then Monroe tells Muriel that she spent "$2 million" on household expenses this month, so Henry changes his mind and sells.
- Mr. Belvedere: Season 2, episode 9, "The Letter" (1985). George tells Mr. Belvedere he's thinking of investing in the stock market, so Mr. Belvedere challenges him to see who makes the most money off of their investment.
- ALF: Season 4, episode 4, "We're in the Money" (1989). Thinking he's playing a computer game, Alf uses Willie's computer to invest the Tanners' money in the stock market, and he makes a bundle, so Willie asks him to invest more, but Alf becomes addicted to playing the market and starts losing all their money.
- Seinfeld: Season 1, episode 5, "The Stock Tip" (1990). George gets a hot stock tip, and he and Jerry both invest. When the stock plummets, Jerry sells, but George decides to "go down with the ship." Unfortunately for Jerry, the stock climbs, and George cleans up.
- Frasier: Season 2, episode 15, "You Scratch My Book..." (1995). Daphne is feeling lucky, so she gives Niles money to invest in the stock market. Her stocks lose money, but Niles can't bring himself to tell Daphne, so he just keeps giving more money back to her.
- NewsRadio: Season 3, episode 9, "Stocks" (1996). Beth inherits some money from her aunt and wants to invest it in the stock market, so she asks Mr. James for advice. Unfortunately, the stocks he helps her pick are losers, but she still makes a profit by selling the bad tips to Bill.
- Dharma & Greg: Season 2, episode 20, "Dharma Drags Edward Out of Retirement" (1999). Dharma finds out that Greg is investing in the stock market, and she wants to invest too. Greg sets up an account and gives her half of their savings, and she promptly loses all of it, then asks Edward for help.
- 3rd Rock from the Sun: Season 5, episode 14, "This Little Dick Went to Market" (2000). When Dick hears that everyone at the office has been investing in the stock market, he decides to join in, and Tommy follows suit, but the stock they choose takes a steep dive when a rumor spreads that the company has been over-spending, so they storm the company and pretend to fire people to cut costs.
- Still Game: Season 2, episode 5, "Tappin'" (2003). Victor tells Jack that they can save a lot of money on their future burials and spend the rest of the money they saved, about £300 each, so they go out on the town and treat themselves to shopping and expensive brandy. When Navid sees their haul, he shows them a website he uses to play the stock market, and they ask him to invest the rest of their money, but the company goes belly up, and they lose it all.
