- Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman: Episode 130 (1976). Season 1 ends with Mary having a nervous breakdown on live television and Tom committing her to an asylum.
- Cheers: Season 3, episode 1, "Rebound: Part 1" (1984). After Sam and Diane finally break up, Diane has a nervous breakdown and ends up in a mental institution.
- Newhart: Season 7, episode 16, "The Little Match Girl" (1989). After Michael has a confrontation with Stephanie and a date in a restaurant, he gets arrested and is given the option to spend 14 days in jail or in a sanitarium; he chooses the sanitarium.
- Seinfeld: Season 3, episode 2, "The Truth" (1991). George breaks up with his girlfriend, and she demands he tell her the truth about why. At first, he makes up excuses, but after further prodding, he tells her she's pretentious, and she gets so upset that she ends up in a mental institution.
- The Simpsons: Season 3, episode 1, "Stark Raving Dad" (1991). Marge accidentally turns Homer's shirt pink, and it starts a chain reaction that leads to his being committed.
- Beavis and Butt-Head: Season 4, episode 5, "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Huh Huh" (1994). The new school psychiatrist finds Beavis and Butt-Head so disturbed, that she sends them to an asylum.
- NewsRadio: Season 3, episode 20, "Our Fiftieth Episode" (1997). Bill loses his shit at a meter attendant who gave him a parking ticket, gets arrested, and after a psych evaluation, he ends up getting committed.
- Spin City: Season 2, episode 1, "Paul Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1997). After Paul and the mayor run off to Miami without telling anyone, Mike gets them both psych evaluations, after Paul's evaluation, he gets committed.
- King of the Hill: Season 4, episode 15, "Naked Ambition" (2000). Boomhaur falls asleep on an inner tube and floats down the river until he ends up in a strange city, sunburned and wearing nothing but a Speedo, so the police arrest him and send him to an asylum. He calls Dale, who calls Bill, and all three of them end up committed. Finally, they call Hank, who gets them all out.
